After a week of wet weather, the early morning pitch inspection on Saturday showed the prospect of a drying ground and a good chance of play against Rowntrees.
With the sun shining and the wind blowing, by 1pm the ground was ready and after losing the toss, the first team were put into bat on a very slow and damn track.
Progress was slow in the early overs and after losing the first wicket, Pullein and Bartram put on a steady 35 for the second wicket. Bartram was run out for 14 which brought Pete Lawler in to join Pullein. Scoring was slow with the damn pitch and soft outfield and after losing Pullein for 38 and Lawler for 21 Cawood were 83-5 with just over 15 overs to go. There was good support from the lower order with Towndrow (20) and Nat Aitchison (18no) which pushed Cawood up to 136 all out, a good score on a steady drying pitch.
After tea, Pullein and Gibson opened the bowling and after 2 early wickets each the visitors were 9-4. With young Matty Green replacing Pullein (2-6) Gibson bowled through his 12 overs and finished with 2-3 including 9 maidens! He was replaced by youngster Will Edwards making his first appearance in senior cricket. Edwards bowled a tidy line and length and was rewarded with figures of 1-4 off his 5 overs. Green picked off another 2 Rowntrees batsmen in his spell of 2-12 and was replaced by Nat Aitchison who picked 2-12 off 4.4 overs. Chairman Towndrow got his first bowl of the season and with a wicket maiden off his solitary over helped Aitchison clean up the tail-enders and bowled Rowntrees out for 45. The firsts won by 91 runs to sit joint top of the division.
The second team game had earlier succumbed to the miserable weather and was rained off early Saturday morning.
